With a touch of humor and a taste for historical storytelling, Goodness from Grit is a wonderful film.

When Isabelle Simi inherits her winery after her father and uncle die, she knows that the only choice she has is to step into their boots and get the winery in order. This film follows her struggles and her perseverance in the face of Prohibition, culminating with a wonderfully satisfying ending about how her determination and vision led to success. It’s charming and wonderfully produced and doesn’t allow any room for sentiment at all.

With engaging storytelling, a fantastic script, and the Academy Award-nominated cinematographer Seamus McGarvey behind the camera, MJZ director Nick Ball brings Isabelle’s story to life in a remarkably cinematic way. The Western inspiration is in full show, from tone to color, and the texture of the film lends itself to the underdog story. Goodness from Grit also features an original cinematic score written, recorded, and produced in Melbourne and Berlin by music house Stare Crazy.
